Paul was born in 1947 in the South African town of Paarl situated in the Boland wine region. He grew up and matriculated in Tulbagh. Paul lived in Hermanus since 1970 where he followed a technical career until 2002. He enjoyed art since childhood and had good results with portrait studies in pencil. In 2003 he started practicing art on a more formal basis under supervision of Peter Earl and began working in acrylic. His childhood in the Boland as well as travels through Namibia and South Africa developed a love and appreciation for nature as can be seen in his landscape paintings. In February 2005 he held his first exhibition at the Hermanus Station Gallery Annexe as part of a four artist New Names group. He was a member of the Hermanus Art Society for a number of years.
His paintings have since been on display in several art galleries such as Station Gallery (Hermanus), Old Harbour Gallery (Hermanus), Gallery on the Bay (Strand and Somerset West), LaMaRey (Hermanus and Strand), 4ArtSake (Botriver and Hermanus), Mossel Bay Art Gallery (Mossel Bay) and Mission House Gallery (Onrus River). Apart from works sold to South Africans some of his paintings went to several countries abroad such as Britain, America, Poland, Mauritius, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Namibia and Chile.Paul also has a keen interest in music and being a lyric and operatic tenor was active as performing artist since an early age. He has performed to audiences in the Overberg region for over 30 years in numerous concerts and performances as tenor soloist and choir member. He was a member of the Hermanus Promusica Choir for many years.
